PURPOSE AND LIMITATIONS TO THIS WEBSITE
The purpose of this website is to:
-
Acknowledge John Black’s (JB) work one hundred years on and prove the accuracy of his saga.
-
Follow the descendants of each of the six males and flesh out the names JB provided along with dates and places to put his document in context.
-
Provide a forum for descendants of William Black and Mary Todd to contribute and receive accurate information about the family.
-
Correct errors that have been perpetuated by JB and others.
-
Add to the knowledge base about the Blacks of the Breich Water. There are a number of branches where we have drawn a blank and we need your help to ensure the family is complete.
-

Format followed:
-
This website is intended to prove only the accuracy of those people mentioned or alluded to by JB.
-
There is one section for each of the six Black sons, however Son-2, John Black married to Helen Steel, was so prolific his narrative has been split into five to manage the sheer quantity of individuals.
-
Each Black son has their own narrative and their own tree. Both are in a downloadable pdf format so they can be updated easily. The trees often contain much more information than is given in the narrative.
-
In the children’s tables, a child marked with an * indicates that the line stops with this person as we have reached the scope of this project.
-
In the children’s tables, a child marked with an ^ indicates that the line will continue for at least one more generation.
-
The place of death is assumed to be Scotland unless otherwise mentioned.
-
Spouses in RED in the narrative are also descendants of William Black and Mary Tod.
-

Current limits to this website:
-
Data has been extracted from parish records, BDM certificates and online family trees. The later source is intended to be a starting point only for discussion and we realise that there will be errors and gaps until we source the originals for each individual.
-
As many dates have been extracted from the indexes of Scotland's People, we are not privy to knowing if the dates indicate a birth or baptism, or a death or burial. Hopefully these will be corrected over time.
-
For privacy reasons we have not attempted to put any living people on any family trees.
